Before the students left for summer break in 06, we discussed the fellowship activities and glass art in general. The students were also asked to recollect some of their memorable experiences from the past school year, in anticipation of the imagery to be developed in the coming glass experiences.
Students in Third through Sixth Grades began this year by taking an inverntory of ideas, activities and traits that make them who they are. Sprayed "personal symbol handprints" and abstract color collages introduced them to the concepts of identity and symbolism, color theory, and abstraction.
Pencil and crayon rubbings were made of one square from each student's collage, then all were combined in a mock-up for a glass tile piece. Various color combinations of glass were discussed and mini-murals assembled.
For about four weeks, students assembled 3-inch tiles (third grade black tiles and fourth grade white). Attention was given to how a tile related to it's neighboring tiles, and how the overall color scheme works. The first layer of glass gradually shifts through five different blues. Accent colors will be added later. The third and fourth grade tiles will be part of two murals in the Fourth Grade wing. Each mural will be comprised of about 110 tiles and will be about 8 feet long.

Meanwhile, pastel green glass is being slumped into clay molds to form what will be part of a series of sconces in the First Grade wing. They relate to the First Graders' project of hatching Monarch butterflies.

Fifth and Sixth grade works are being developed.
